Becoming a Historical Landmark

What a cool chain of events is happening for us here at Candlelight! Our century old building, which is located prominently on Rockwall’s Historic Town Square, is currently being designated as a Historic Landmark. What a deal!

In researching its history, we found that the building was originally built by the Heath and Jones families, with a mercantile store on the lower level and a Masonic hall on the upper level. Some of the ‘old-timers’ around here still remember when the mural on the north side of the building was a Coca Cola sign.

Sometime, several years later, the building was sold and became the Rockwall Flower Shop, which it remained for over 50 years. When we bought the building, our plan was to just lease it out. Then we started restoring it to its original beauty, and the longer we (along with our best friends for over 40 years) worked on it, the more we wanted to ‘lease’ it to ourselves.

Now, after 2 1/2 years, the restoration is finally finished, complete with a loft apartment on the upper floor. It’s beautiful! And, what a great view we have from the apartment. We can look down at all the happenings on the square or look out from our breakfast bar at the lake and much of the Dallas skyline beyond the lake. We hope to eventually put some sort of deck on the roof where the view is absolutely unobstructed.

Recently, the city really caught us off-guard by coming to us with the Landmark proposal. We were both flattered and pleasantly surprised. I will vigorously continue researching the building so the plaque will correctly give a synopsis of its history. We will keep you up-to-date on any new interesting facts we dig up.
